An American Airlines McDonnell Douglas MD-83, registration N598AA performing flight AA-313 from Denver,CO to Dallas Ft. Worth,TX (USA) with 139 people on board, was climbing through 17,500 feet out of Denver's runway 34L when the right hand (JT8D) engine failed prompting the crew to stop the climb, shut the engine down and return to Denver for a safe landing on runway 35L about 30 minutes after departure. The aircraft stopped on the runway for emergency services to check out the engine, emergency services reported the engine looked normal apart from being shut down. The aircraft subsequently taxied to the apron with the emergency services in trail.

A replacement MD-82 registration N478AA reached Dallas with a delay of 9:20 hours.

Passengers reported there was a loud bang from the right hand engine, the engine was shut down.
