A Delta Airlines McDonnell Douglas MD-90, registration N930DN performing flight DL-1651 from Minneapolis,MN to Las Vegas,NV (USA) with 168 people on board, was descending towards Las Vegas about 13 minutes prior to landing when at about 12,000 feet the first officer declared emergency reporting, that the captain had left the cockpit and was unable to re-enter the cockpit due to a malfunctioning cockpit door, that could not be convinced to open again. The first officer completed a safe landing at Las Vegas 13 minutes later.

The occurrence aircraft was able to continue its schedule and departed for the return flight, still DL-1651, to Minneapolis about 2 hours after landing and with a delay of 45 minutes.

The airline reported the pilot left the cockpit prior to final approach but was unable to return to the cockpit because the cockpit door malfunctioned.

The FAA opened an investigation.
