An Austrian Airlines Boeing 777-200, registration OE-LPE performing flight OS-87 from Vienna (Austria) to New York JFK,NY (USA) with 283 passengers, was enroute at FL350 about 90nm northwest of Berlin (Germany) when the crew decided to return to Vienna due to malfunction of the air conditioning system. The aircraft landed safely back in Vienna about 70 minutes later.

A replacement Boeing 777-200 registration OE-LPB is estimated to reach New York with a delay of 5 hours.

A passenger reported it had been "raining in the cabin" with quite a few seats being affected, presumably because of a problem with the air conditioning.

The airline confirmed that between seat rows 12 and 13 water had been released. The aircraft is being examined, current assumption is that condensation had been dripping down. For passenger comfort the aircraft returned to Vienna even though technically it would have been possible to continue to New York.
