An Austrian Airlines Airbus A320-200, registration OE-LBQ performing flight OS-698 from Astana (Kazakhstan) to Vienna (Austria), was taxiing for departure when during the flight controls' check the crew received an fault indication for the spoilers and returned to the gate. Following maintenance actions the aircraft taxied out again, during the flight controls' check the same fault indication re-occurred and the aircraft returned to the gate. Maintenance subsequently disabled the right hand #4 spoiler and released the aircraft according to minimum equipment list requirements. The aircraft departed and was on approach to Vienna when the right hand spoiler #4 opened uncommandedly and remained partially extended until after landing. The crew requested runway 29 better aligned with the wind and landed safely.

The Aviation Herald learned that the spoiler actuator had been configured to a wrong mode, maintenance should not have released the aircraft that way.
