A Virgin Atlantic Boeing 747-400, registration G-VROC performing flight VS-20 from San Francisco,CA (USA) to London Heathrow,EN (UK), was enroute at FL330 about 650nm northeast of San Francisco about 90 minutes into the flight when the crew decided to return to San Francisco due to eletrical problems. The aircraft landed safely back in San Francisco about 3.5 hours after departure.

The aircraft was able to depart again after about 2:45 hours on the ground and reached London with a delay of 5 hours.

A passenger reported that following a normal lights off departure the captain announced they had to reboot the inflight entertainment system. Later the inflight entertainment system failed again, the crew announced they were returning to San Francisco due to electrical problems. The passenger concluded: "After landing we were kept on the plane while engineers assessed the problem. We are now getting ready to takeoff again, but our food has expired and we don't have time to take on more."
