An American Airlines Boeing 757-200, registration N645AA performing flight AA-655 from New York JFK,NY (USA) to Saint Thomas (Virgin Islands), was climbing out of New York when a loud pop was heard, vibrations were felt throughout the airframe and the flight crew received indications of dropping hydraulic quantity for the center hydraulic system. After the aircraft levelled off at FL350 the crew decided to return to New York. During the approach the pressure in the center hydraulic system dropped rapidly. The airplane landed overweight but safely on JFK Airport's runway 04L with emergency services on standby, taxied off the runway and stopped on the adjacent taxiway requesting emergency service check for hydraulic leaks with fluid possibly dripping onto brakes, then taxied to the gate.

Post flight inspection revealed the hydraulic service panel located at the underside of the aircraft just aft of the left main gear wheel well was missing from the aircraft, the center hydraulic system was damaged.

A replacement Boeing 757-200 is estimated to reach Saint Thomas with a delay of 6.5 hours.
