A MEA Airbus A320-200, registration T7-MRC performing flight ME-214 from Geneva (Switzerland) to Beirut (Lebanon) with 118 people on board, was enroute at FL350 about 170nm eastsoutheast of Rome (Italy) when the crew was informed by Swiss Airport Authorities that a mismatch in the luggage had been detected, a piece of luggage was travelling without its owner on the aircraft. Italy's Airforce dispatched two Typhoon fighter aircraft to accompany the aircraft to Rome Fiumicino Airport where the aircraft landed safely about 30 minutes later.

The aircraft, passengers and luggage were searched, no trace of explosives was found.

The aircraft departed Rome after about 3.5 hours on the ground and reached Beirut with a delay of 4:40 hours.
