A Transaero Boeing 737-700, registration EI-EUX performing flight UN-252 from Riga (Latvia) to Moscow Vnukovo (Russia), was climbing out Riga's runway 18 when the crew stopped the climb at FL240 following a right hand engine (CFM56) surge. The engine was shut down and the aircraft returned to Riga for a safe landing on runway 18 about 30 minutes after departure.

The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground in Riga about 28 hours after landing.
