A Thomson Airways Boeing 787-800, registration G-TUIE performing flight BY-157 (dep Aug 4th) from Puerto Plata (Dominican Republic) to Manchester,EN (UK) with 288 people on board, was enroute at FL410 about 550nm west of Terceira Island (Portugal) when the crew needed to shut the right hand engine (GEnx) down due to a low oil pressure indication. The aircraft drifted down to FL230 and diverted to Terceira's Lajes Airport for a safe landing on runway 15 about 90 minutes later.

Initial decisions were to replace the engine, a thorough review of the engine by airline's and engine manufacturer's maintenance teams revealed the possibility to repair the engine on site, related spare parts have been delivered to Lajes on Aug 7th.

The Aviation Herald learned on Aug 9th that the gearbox's casing had been breached causing loss of oil, the engine remained unaffected. The gearbox was replaced, the aircraft was able to depart Lajes on Aug 9th 2014 as flight BY-9009 and positioned to Manchester,EN (UK).

A replacement Boeing 767-300 registration G-OBYH was dispatched to Lajes, resumed the flight and reached Manchester with a delay of 15 hours.
