A Swiftair McDonnell Douglas MD-83 on behalf of Vueling, registration EC-LEY performing flight VY-6405 from Venice (Italy) to Barcelona,SP (Spain), was climbing out of Venice when the left hand engine (JT8D) emitted a loud bang prompting the crew to level off, shut the engine down and return to Venice for a safe landing about 20 minutes later.

Vueling confirmed engine problems and said, a replacement aircraft delivered the passengers to Barcelona with a delay of about 6 hours.

The incident has caused rumours on the Internet that EC-LTV, which later crashed over Mali (see Crash: Swiftair MD83 over Mali on Jul 24th 2014, aircraft lost altitude), was involved in that occurrence, EC-LTV however was enroute on flight AH-1087 from Paris Orly (France) to Tlemcen (Algeria) at the time of the occurrence.
