A Lufthansa Airbus A321-100, registration D-AIRU performing flight LH-1180 from Frankfurt/Main (Germany) to Porto (Portugal), was already enroute at FL330 about 180nm westsouthwest of Frankfurt in French Airspace when the crew decided to return to Frankfurt due to an abnormal gear indication. The aircraft descended to FL320 and landed safely back in Frankfurt about 110 minutes after departure.

A replacement A321-200 registration D-AISO reached Porto with a delay of 12.5 hours.

Passengers reported the captain announced a malfunction in the landing gear required the return to Frankfurt.
