A United Boeing 747-400, registration N121UA performing flight UA-840 from Sydney,NS (Australia) to Los Angeles,CA (USA), was enroute over the Pacific when a passenger got increasingly unruly until crew decided to restrain the unruly and divert to Honolulu,HI (USA) for a safe landing on runway 08L. Police took the unruly into custody. A passenger on board reported the man in his eartly twenties became increasingly drunk while consuming his stock of alcohol purchased in duty free and became increasingly agitated, was handcuffed and taken away by police after landing in Honolulu. Three passengers, who assisted the crew in restraining the unruly, were upgraded to business class for the continuation to Los Angeles. The aircraft reached Los Angeles with a delay of 110 minutes.
