A Delta Airlines Airbus A319-100, registration N315NB performing flight DL-2388 performing flight DL-2388 from Santa Ana,CA to Minneapolis,MN (USA) with 121 passengers and 5 crew, was in the initial climb out of Santa Ana's runway 19R when the crew reported an engine had been shut down and levelled off at 5000 feet requesting vectors to Los Angeles International Airport,CA. One approach to Los Angeles' runway 25L was pulled off the approach to facilitate the emergency. The A319 landed safely on Los Angeles' runway 25L about 15 minutes after departure, vacated the runway and stopped for a check by emergency services before continuing to the apron.

The FAA reported the engine experienced a compressor stall.

A ground witness reported hearing two loud bangs, an engine emitting streaks of flames before the aircraft disappeared into the clouds.
