A Jet2.com Boeing 757-200, registration G-LSAE performing flight LS-516 from Paphos (Cyprus) to Newcastle,EN (UK), was enroute at FL380 about 140nm east of Sofia (Bulgaria) when the crew initiated an emergency descent to FL100 levelling off at FL100 about 6 minutes later (average rate of descent 4700 fpm) and decided to divert to Sofia requesting radar vectors but advising they did have the approach plates for Sofia and were able to fly the ILS. About 30 minutes prior to landing Sofia Airport began to keep the runway sterile sending other arriving aircraft into holds advising of at least 20 minutes delay and adivsing that traffic that once the emergency had landed a runway inspection for debris would be needed. The 757 deviated around weather on their way to Sofia and landed safely on Sofia's runway 09 about 50 minutes after leaving FL380. The aircraft vacated the runway, the crew did not require any further assistance, and taxied to the apron. A runway inspection did not locate any debris.

After the Jet2 Boeing 757-200 had landed push back clearances were issued to aircraft waiting for departure and the aircraft in the holds were vectored towards final approach to runway 09, the first aircraft touched down about 7 minutes after the Boeing 757.
