A Cargolux Boeing 747-400 on behalf of Cargolux Italy, registration LX-WCV performing freight flight C8-4711 from Milan Malpensa (Italy) to Sao Paulo Viracopos,SP (Brazil) with 3 crew, was enroute over Mauritania about 300nm southeast of Las Palmas,CI (Spain) when the crew received a wheel well fire indication and decided to divert to Las Palmas's Gran Canaria Airport. The aircraft descended to FL220 cruising at about 370 knots above ground and landed safely on Las Palmas' runway 03R with emergency services in attendance about one hour later. Emergency services found no trace of fire or heat, the aircraft taxied to the apron with the emergency vehicles trailing the aircraft.

The aircraft was able to continue the flight after about 4.5 hours on the ground and reached Sao Paulo with a delay of 6 hours.
