An El Al Boeing 737-700, registration 4X-EKE performing flight LY-289 from Tel Aviv (Israel) to Venice (Italy) with 98 passengers, was enroute at FL340 about 170nm eastsoutheast of Dubrovnik (Croatia) when the first officer became ill and was unable to continue his duties. The captain declared emergency and diverted to Dubrovnik for a safe landing about 30 minutes later.

The airline confirmed the first officer became incapacitated during the flight. A replacement crew was dispatched to Dubrovnik on a private jet to continue the flight.

The aircraft reached Venice with a delay of 6:20 hours.
