A Hawaiian Airlines Boeing 767-300, registration N587HA performing flight HA-36 from Honolulu,HI to Phoenix,AZ (USA), was enroute at FL370 about 90 minutes into the Pacific crossing when the crew decided to turn around and return to Honolulu suspecting a possible oil leak. The crew did not request assistance and landed safely on Honolulu's runway 08L about 105 minutes later. The runway was swept following the arrival of the aircraft.

A passenger reported the crew announced a minor maintenance item as reason for the return to Honolulu.

The occurrence aircraft was able to depart again after about 1:45 hours on the ground and reached Phoenix with a delay of 5.5 hours.
