The incident aircraft had landed in Tenerife the previous day as flight VY-3254 from Sevilla,SP (Spain), but could not perform the return flight VY-3255 as scheduled and needed to overnight in Tenerife. The next flight, departing Tenerife about 18 hours after landing and still transponding call sign VLG3255 instead of VLG3215, needed to return.
