A PIA Pakistan International Airlines Airbus A310-300, registration AP-BEQ performing flight PK-899 from Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) to Lahore (Pakistan), had just reached cruise level 340 when the crew requested to return to Kuala Lumpur reporting a minor technical problem, they were no longer RNAV capable but expected a normal landing with no assistance needed. The aircraft returned for a safe landing on Kuala Lumpur's runway 32L about 65 minutes after departure.

A Pakistani TV station reported an engine had caught fire.

The airline confirmed a technical malfunction during the flight but said no engine fire had occurred.
