A Shandong Airlines Boeing 737-800, registration B-5450 performing flight SC-4816 from Hefei to Xiamen (China), was climbing out of Hefei when an engine (CFM56) ingested birds prompting the crew to return to Hefei, where the aircraft landed safely.

The flight was cancelled, the passengers were taken to hotels and rebooked onto flights the following day.

Maintenance determined the engine received substantial damage.
