UNMISS (United Nations Mission in South Sudan) confirmed one crew member was killed when the aircraft carrying items (drinking water, hygiene and sanitation articles, medicine and shelter materials) for about 3,200 displaced people crashed on landing in Bentiu. The three other occupants were rescued and flown out to Nairobi (Kenya).
Local Authorities reported the crew lost control of the aircraft while landing in Bentiu and went off the runway.
An observer on the ground reported the aircraft attempted an unstabilized approach being too high and too fast for landing. The aircraft veered off the runway, ran across a ditch, contacted vehicles and came to a stop broken up.
Another ground observer reported, that the aircraft landed in southerly direction but touched down nose wheel first, bounced about three times, while in the last bounce the right hand wing appeared to stall and contacted ground first, the aircraft veered off the runway and moved towards the UN fuel depot outside the aerodrome perimeter, collided with two cars parked about 30 meters from the fuel depot and came to a stop 10 meters short of the depot.
Bentiu features a dirt runway of about 1250 meters/4100 feet length in roughly north/south direction running parallel to a main road, satellite images identify a ditch between runway and main road.
