A Delta Airlines McDonnell Douglas MD-88, registration N923DL performing flight DL-2219 from New York La Guardia,NY to Minneapolis,MN (USA) with 150 people on board, was departing La Guardia Airport's runway 31 when upon rotation the left hand engine suffered a compressor stall and failed. The crew climbed to safe altitude, shut the engine down, worked the relevant checklists and diverted to New York's JFK Airport for a safe landing on runway 31R about 20 minutes after departure.

A passenger reported the left engine emitted a number of bangs just as the aircraft became airborne. The crew announced there had been compressor stalls at the left hand engine and they were diverting to JFK Airport.
