A KLM Cityhopper Fokker 70, registration PH-JCH performing flight KL-1885 from Amsterdam (Netherlands) to Nuremberg (Germany), was climbing out of Amsterdam's runway 24 when the crew immediately after contacting departure requested a left hand turn to 180 degrees to avoid (editorial note: a strong updraft quickly developing over the extended centerline of the runway), the crew was cleared to turn left onto a heading of 030. The crew however stopped the climb at FL090 reporting control problems as result of a lightning strike, worked the relevant checklists at FL090 and returned to Amsterdam for a safe landing on runway 27 about 45 minutes after departure.

A replacement Fokker 70 registration PH-JCT reached Nuremberg with a delay of 2 hours.

Maintenance found no damage to the aircraft and returned the aircraft to service. The aircraft resumed service the following morning (Nov 4th).
