Qantas B738 at Canberra on Jul 5th 2013, severe turbulence injures flight attendant

A Qantas Boeing 737-800, registration VH-VZY performing flight QF-718 from Perth,WA to Canberra,AC (Australia) with 162 passengers and 7 crew, was on approach to Canberra descending through 8000 to assigned 7500 feet when the aircraft began to encounter severe turbulence lasting for about 2 minutes causing the crew to have difficulties to maintain the assigned 7500 feet for about one minute, the aircraft descended to 7200 feet instead. After regaining full control the crew returned to 7500 feet, turned on the fasten seat belt signs and advised ATC. The crew continued for a safe landing in Canberra. A flight attendant received minor injuries in the turbulence encounter.

Australia's TSB released their bulletin releasing following safety message:

Turbulence is a weather phenomenon responsible for the abrupt sideways and vertical jolts that passengers often experience during flights, and is the leading cause of in-flight injuries to passengers and cabin crew.

and advising passengers that nearly all injuries can be avoided if:

- Putting your seatbelt on and keeping it fastened when you are seated.

- Paying attention to the safety demonstration and any instructions given by the cabin crew.

- Reading the safety information card in your seat pocket.
