A Qantas Boeing 747-400, registration VH-OEI performing flight QF-8 from Dallas Ft. Worth,TX (USA) to Brisbane,QL (Australia), was climbing out of Dallas' runway 36L when the outboard left hand engine (CF6) ingested a large bird. The crew continued the climb, but stopped at FL260 and decided to divert to Los Angeles, later climbing the aircraft to FL280. The aircraft landed safely on Los Angeles' runway 25L about 2:45 hours later.

A passenger reported that a large bird hit the outboard left hand engine causing the aircraft to shudder. The aircraft diverted to Los Angeles later dumping fuel.

Engine #1 needed a number of damaged fan blades to be replaced. The aircraft was able to cross the Pacific two days later.
