A Virgin Atlantic Airbus A340-300, registration G-VAIR performing flight VS-251 from Shanghai (China) to London Heathrow,EN (UK), was on approach to London Heathrow descending through about FL080 when the crew reported a hydraulic failure. The crew subsequently performed an alternate gear extension and continued for a safe landing on Heathrow's runway 09L with gear doors open and center gear retracted (indicative of the gravity gear extension which releases nose and main gear but not center gear). The aircraft stopped on the runway and was towed to the gate.
