Virgin Atlantic A333 near Gander on Aug 17th 2013, engine shut down in flight

A Virgin Atlantic Airbus A330-300, registration G-VRAY performing VS-25 from London Heathrow,EN (UK) to New York JFK,NY (USA) with 270 people on board, was enroute at FL340 about 300nm north of Gander,NL when the crew detected a fuel leak in the right hand engine (Trent 772) and shut the engine down. The crew declared emergency, the aircraft drifted down to FL200 while setting course towards Gander. The aircraft landed safely on Gander's runway 21 about 45 minutes later.

A replacement Airbus A340-600 registration G-VYOU was dispatched from London to Gander, continued the flight and reached New York with a delay of 17.5 hours.

The airline reported the aircraft diverted to Gander due to a technical fault, the passengers remained at Gander over night until a replacement aircraft arrived.

Passengers complained they were left at the Airport without accomodation but with an explanation there were no hotel rooms available.

The airline tweeted apologies to the passengers stating that all hotels were full that night.

On Aug 27th 2013 the Canadian TSB reported the crew detected a discrepancy between the quantities in the left and right hand fuel tanks with less fuel in the right hand tank. Suspecting a fuel leak the crew worked the relevant checklists and shut the right hand engine down. The crew declared emergency and diverted to Gander. Maintenance found the fuel feed pipe to the fuel pump of engine #2 was holed/cracked under the P-clip. The pipe and the clip were replaced.
