TAM A332 near Salvador on Aug 6th 2013, captain incapacitated, died two days later

A TAM Linhas Aereas Airbus A330-200, registration PT-MVC performing flight JJ-8054 from Rio de Janeiro,RJ (Brazil) to Paris Charles de Gaulle (France) with 136 passengers, was enroute at FL370 about 75nm east of Salvador,BA (Brazil) when the captain became ill and was unable to continue duties. The augmenting captain took his position, the crew diverted the aircraft to Salvador for a safe landing on runway 10 about 20 minutes later. The captain was taken to a hospital.

The passengers were taken to hotels, a replacement crew continued the flight as JJ-9378 after about 10 hours on the ground, PT-MVC is estimated to reach Paris with a delay of 10.5 hours.

On Aug 9th the airline sadly reported that the captain had succumbed to a heart attack late Aug 8th and offered condolences to his family and friends.
