A Lufthansa Airbus A319-100, registration D-AIBA performing flight LH-696 from Frankfurt/Main (Germany) to Erbil (Iraq), was climbing out of Frankfurt about 35nm north of Nuremberg when the aircraft was struck by lightning prompting the crew to stop the climb at FL360 and to return to Frankfurt for a safe landing on runway 25C about 30 minutes after departure.

A replacement Airbus A319-100 registration D-AILU reached Erbil with a delay of 3 hours.

The incident aircraft is still on the ground 24 hours later.

At the time of the incident a frontal system stretching from the Mediterranean to the North Sea was moving across Germany from west to east with embedded thunderstorms in the area around Nuremberg.
