An Iberia Airbus A340-300, registration EC-GUP performing flight IB-6533 from Madrid,SP (Spain) to San Juan (Puerto Rico), was climbing out of Madrid's runway 36L when a vulture penetrated the aircraft's radome causing a large hole. The crew levelled off at 7000 feet and returned to runway 33L for a safe landing about 70 minutes after departure.

The aircraft received damage to the pitot systems as well as structural damage to the nose section, the aircraft is expected out of service for a number of weeks.
