An American Airlines Boeing 737-800, registration N817NN performing flight AA-2173 from Miami,FL (USA) to Panama City (Panama) with 147 passengers, was enroute near Grand Cayman Island (Cayman Islands) when the crew reported a fuel bypass indication (engine CFM56) and diverted to Grand Cayman's Robert Owen International Airport for a safe landing.

A replacement Boeing 737-800 registration N805NN positioned from Miami to Grand Cayman as flight AA-9620, continued the flight to Panama City and delivered the passengers to Panama City with a delay of 7.5 hours.
