An American Eagle Embraer ERJ-135, registration N722AE performing flight MQ-4563 from Detroit,MI to New York La Guardia,NY (USA) with 20 passengers and 3 crew, was descending towards New York's La Guardia Airport when the aircraft was struck by lightning twice prompting the commander to declare emergency. The aircraft continued for a safe landing on runway 04.

The airline confirmed the aircraft was struck by lightning twice, the commander declared emergency as a precaution. The aircraft is being inspected.

N722AE was removed from service for the remainder of May 8th and is estimated to resume service the following day after about 20 hours on the ground.

At the time of the arrival of MQ-4563 a number of other aircraft, e.g. Shuttle America S5-5932 from Chicago O'Hare to La Guardia Airport, reported lightning strikes, too, advising they didn't need assistance.

A frontal system was moving over the area at the time of the lightning strikes.
