A Lufthansa Airbus A321-200, registration D-AISL performing flight LH-851 from Helsinki (Finland) to Frankfurt/Main (Germany) with 162 passengers and 6 crew, was climbing out of Helsinki's runway 22R when the left hand engine (V2533) emitted a number of bangs accompanied by streaks of flame (usually indicative of engine compressor stalls or engine surges). The crew reduced the engine to idle thrust, levelled off at 2500 feet and returned to Helsinki's runway 15 for a safe landing about 15 minutes after departure.

The flight was cancelled.

The left hand engine was replaced, the aircraft positioned to Frankfurt on May 8th and resumed service afterwards.
