A Nordwind Airlines Airbus A320-200, registration VP-BJH performing flight NWS-1980 from Sharm el Sheikh (Egypt) to Kazan (Russia) with 159 people on board, was enroute at FL340 over Syria about 35nm southsoutheast of Aleppo (Syria) with proper overflight permissions and under Syrian ATC control when the crew reported two missiles reached estimated FL290-300 in the vicinity of the aircraft. The crew decided to climb to FL360 in response and continued the flight to Kazan for a safe landing about 3 hours later.

Rosaviatsia confirmed the occurrence reporting that the airline had obtained overflight permission, no restrictions were in effect.

In February 2013 Rosaviatsia (Russia's CAA) had recommended airlines to not fly through Syrian Airspace due to the continuing combat activities in the country. In a release on Apr 30th 2013 Rosaviatsia complained that while a good number of safety minded airlines heeded the advice and routed their flights around Syria, a few airlines still decided to ignore the advice and overflew Syria.

Following the incident Rosaviatsia banned Syrian Airspace for all Russian aircraft.
