A Canadian North Boeing 737-200, registration C-GCNV performing flight 5T-9420 from Edmonton,AB to Snap Lake,NT (Canada) with 98 people on board, had just reached FL320 after departure from Edmonton when the crew detected the hydraulic quantity of system A was decreasing. The crew requested to return to Edmonton. During the descent the quantity reduced to about 1/4 of a gallon and hydraulic pressure of system A was lost. The aircraft continued for a safe landing about 40 minutes after departure, emergency service observed hydraulic fluid running down the left hand wing in the vicinity of the left hand engine. The aircraft was shut down on the adjacent taxiway and towed to the apron.

The Canadian TSB reported maintenance identified the slat #2 actuator was spraying hydraulic fluid. The actuator was replaced, an overweight landing inspection performed and the aircraft released to service. The TSB reported that a passenger had noticed fluid leaking from the left hand wing prior to departure and had even taken photos, however, had not advised any of the crew until disembarking.
