A Lao Air de Havilland DHC-6-200 Twin Otter, registration RDPL-34180 performing a flight LLL-201 from Nathong [VLSN] to Vientiane (Laos) with 16 passengers and 2 crew, was departing Nathongairstrip at 14:35L (07:35Z) but could not climb clear of trees around the aerodrome, clipped a number of trees, lost height and came to a stop on its left side with the left wing detached in a canal about 200 meters off the runway. All occupants were able to leave the wreckage, 5 people were taken to hospitals with chest injuries of varying degrees. The aircraft sustained damage beyond repair.

Lao Air operate one DHC-6-200 registration RDPL-34180 and one DHC-6-300 registration RDPL-34179 amongst other aircraft and are not to be confused with Lao Airlines (Laos' national carrier).

No weather data are available for Nathong.

Nathong airstrip features an asphalt runway 08/26 of 1132 meters/3700 feet length and 24 meters/80 feet width.
