A Delta Airlines Boeing 747-400, registration N676NW performing flight DL-173 from New York JFK,NY (USA) to Tokyo Narita (Japan), was enroute over the Beaufort Sea just north of Canada, about 900nm northeast of Anchorage,AK (USA) when the crew reported electrical issues, no need to request priority or declare emergency, and decided to divert to Anchorage. On approach to Anchorage the crew again reported they had electrical issues but no need for assistance, the airport however was treating the flight as an emergency after ATC had declared emergency for the flight. The aircraft landed safely on Anchorage's runway 07R about two hours after reporting the electrical problem.

The onward flight to Tokyo and further on to Manila (Philippines) was cancelled according to the airline's website.

A replacement Boeing 747-400 registration N674US departed Anchorage the following day and is estimated to reach Tokyo as flight DL-9873 with a delay of 22 hours.
