An American Eagle Embraer ERJ-145, registration N694AE performing flight MQ-4210 from Chicago O'Hare,IL to Sioux City,IA (USA), was climbing out of Chicago when the crew stopped the climb at FL250 and decided to return to Chicago for a safe landing about 50 minutes after departure to pick up a passenger that had missed the flight.

Passengers reported they initially thought the captain was joking when he announced they needed to return to Chicago to pick up a pilot, who had been left behind.

The airline reported one of the pilots on the flight would have exceeded permitted hours on the return flight. Therefore another pilot had been rostered onto the return flight, who however had to travel to Sioux City as a passenger, but arrived late at the gate. For some reason the flight had not been held, so that when the pilot arrived at the gate the aircraft had already departed. It was decided to have the aircraft return to Chicago to be able to perform the return flight, otherwise the aircraft could not have departed Sioux City again.

The aircraft reached Sioux City with a delay of just over 2 hours.
