A Lufthansa Airbus A340-600, registration D-AIHV performing flight LH-412 from Munich (Germany) to Newark,NJ (USA), was enroute at FL360 about 60nm northwest of Knock (Ireland) when the crew requested to divert to Frankfurt/Main (Germany) reporting a technical problem not relevant to flight safety. The aircraft descended to FL350 and turned around. About 15 minutes later the crew requested to descend to FL250 indicating the right hand windshield had cracked. The aircraft landed safely on Frankfurt 07C with emergency services on stand by about 2 hours later.

A replacement Airbus A340-600 registration D-AIHE departed Frankfurt about 2 hours after landing and reached Newark with a delay of 5.5 hours.
