The airline confirmed a runway excursion that resulted in no injuries.
Nigeria's NSIB reported the aircraft suffered a runway excursion at about 15:10L (14:10Z). An investigation has been opened, the go team was at the accident site within minutes.
No weather data are available for Benin City.
In August 2026 Nigeria's NSIB released their preliminary report reporting the crew performed a RNAV approach to runway 05 and wrote:
At 14:42 h, Benin Tower advised the crew that the approach path to Runway 05 appeared cloudy and that the approach path to Runway 23 appeared better. The crew acknowledged and elected to continue the RNAV approach to Runway 05.
At 14:48 h, the CVR recorded the DATCO advising the crew that visibility was about 1,500 m in moderate rain.
During the approach, Benin Tower continued to provide updated information on rainfall, visibility, and surface wind.
At 14:53:08 h, the CVR recordings showed that flaps 5 was called for and at 14:53:18h, flaps 5 was set.
At 14:53:24 h, ATC passed a landing clearance as “FIVE NOVEMBER ECHO NOVEMBER ROMEO SURFACE WIND IS ONE EIGHT ZERO ZERO EIGHT KNOT EXERCISE CAUTION ON LANDING RUNWAY SURFACE WET WITH THE RUNWAY IN SIGHT CLEARED TO LAND RUNWAY ZERO FIVE”. The crew acknowledged and continued the approach.
During the approach briefing, the First Officer stated that the autobrake system was not working and that manual braking would be used for landing. The crew also crosschecked an approximate landing weight of 32,000 kg.
The CVR showed that the crew continued the approach after acquiring visual reference, with recorded crew coordination and approach call-outs.
At 14:54:49 h, the FDR information indicated that the aircraft touched down at about 1,641.5 m from the threshold of Runway 05 at a recorded groundspeed of about 138.2 kt.
At 14:54:52 h, the CVR recorded the Captain calling “max reversal”.
At 14:54:58 h, the CVR recorded flight crew vocalisations, followed by a loud noise and landing-gear aural warnings. After coming to a stop at about 325 m from the end of Runway 05, the flight crew informed Benin Tower that the aircraft had overshot the runway and was at the far end. ATC acknowledged and advised that fire vehicles were on the way. The Duty Air Traffic Controller activated the airport emergency response and notified the Aerodrome Rescue and Fire Fighting Service (ARFFS) and relevant airport and ATC agencies.
All occupants were evacuated unhurt via the emergency escape slide through the rear left door (L2).
