A United Boeing 757-300, registration N57870 performing flight UA-1607 from Los Angeles,CA to Kahului,HI (USA), was enroute at FL310 over the Pacific Ocean about 500nm westsouthwest of Los Angeles, when the crew reported an engine (RB211) had been shut down. The aircraft drifted down to FL170 and returned to Los Angeles for a safe overweight landing on runway 07L (active runways 24/25) about 80 minutes later and vacated the runway but stopped on the next taxiway asking emergency services to check the hot brakes and inquiring whether the tyres were still inflated. The aircraft subsequently slowly taxied to the apron.

The flight was cancelled.
