An Atlas Air Boeing 747-400 Dreamlifter, registration N718BA performing flight 5Y-4512 from Everett,WA (USA) to Nagoya (Japan), was in the initial climb out of Everett's runway 16R when after already being handed off to departure the crew tuned back onto tower frequency and reported the #1 hydraulic system had failed on departure and the nose gear doors didn't close and inquired with tower, whether tower had observed anything out of the ordinary, tower and another crew waiting for departure did not observe anything unusual however. The crew requested a runway inspection and information relayed to departure frequency, a subsequent runway inspection did not find any debris or hydraulic fluid on the runway. The Boeing 747 levelled off at 10,000 feet, dumped fuel and returned to Everett for a low approach to runway 16R to have the aircraft inspected from the ground before safe landing on runway 16R about 110 minutes after departure.
