An Iberia Airbus A330-300, registration EC-LUX performing flight IB-381 from Madrid,SP (Spain) to San Juan (Puerto Rico), was climbing out of Madrid's runway 36L when the crew stopped the climb at 5000 feet reporting a strong odour of smoke in the cabin. The aircraft returned to Madrid for a safe landing on runway 32L about 15 minutes after departure. The aircraft vacated the runway and stopped clear of the runway for an inspection by emergency services. About 70 minutes after landing the aircraft proceeded to the apron.

The flight was cancelled.

The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground in Madrid about 24 hours after landing.
