A BA Cityflyer Embraer ERJ-190, registration G-LCAF performing flight BA-7016 from Florence (Italy) to London Stansted,EN (UK), was climbing through FL310 out of Florence when the crew needed to shut the left hand engine (CF34) down and decided to divert to Milan Malpensa (Italy) for a safe landing on runway 35R about 40 minutes later.

The aircraft is still on the ground about 7 hours later.

Observers reported the left hand engine was emitting smoke.
