A Southwest Airlines Boeing 737-8 MAX, registration N1807U performing flight WN-984 from Phoenix,AZ to San Francisco,CA (USA) with 106 people on board, was enroute at FL380 about 50nm eastnortheast of Ontario,CA when the crew decided to divert to Ontario reporting smoke on board. Descending through about 10,000 feet the crew advised that the smoke had dissipated. The aircraft landed safely on Ontario's runway 26 and stopped on the runway for about 5 minutes before taxiing to the apron.

A replacement Boeing 737-700 registration N7876A reached San Francisco with a delay of about 2.5 hours.

The occurrence aircraft returned to service about 10 hours after landing.
