A Delta Airlines Airbus A330-300, registration N831NW performing flight DL-112 from Boston,MA (USA) to Rome Fiumicino (Italy), was climbing out of Boston when the crew denied a left turn reporting there was a cell in that way, subsequently stopped the climb at 16000 feet reporting they had been hit by lightning. The aircraft returned to Boston for a safe landing about one hour after departure.

The FAA reported: "Delta Air Lines Flight 112 returned to and landed safely at Boston Logan International Airport around 7:20 p.m. local time after the crew reported a lightning strike following departure. The Airbus A330 was headed to Rome, Italy. The FAA will investigate. FAA regulations require that commercial aircraft be designed to withstand lightning strikes."

The aircraft is still on the ground in Boston about 14 hours after landing and is currently not estimated to return to service before Aug 6th 2024.
