A Qantas Boeing 737-800, registration VH-XZD performing flight QF-141 from Sydney,NS (Australia) to Auckland (New Zealand), departed Sydney's runway 16R and climbed to FL330. About 170nm east of Sydney the crew decided to return to Sydney following a bird strike during their departure. The aircraft entered a hold and landed safely on runway 16R about 2 hours after departure.

The airline reported a bird strike shortly after takeoff prompted the flight to return to Sydney. The aircraft is being inspected. The passengers were accomodated on alternate flights.

Passengers reported a jolt was felt, then a smell of rotten meat developed. Cabin crew discussed a "massive sea gull". The aircraft burned off fuel due to overweight. Emergency services were attending to the aircraft after landing.

The occurrence aircraft returned to service about 5 hours after landing back.
