Southwest B737 over Nebraska on Feb 23rd 2012, turbulence injures flight attendant

A Southwest Airlines Boeing 737-700, registration N915WN performing flight WN-561 from Chicago Midway,IL to Los Angeles,CA (USA) with 136 passengers and 5 crew, was enroute at FL360 about 12nm north of Pawnee,NE when the aircraft encountered turbulence causing a flight attendant to be thrown against the aft galley door. Although the flight attendant felt some pain in her right hand she continued her duties. The aircraft continued to Los Angeles for a safe landing about 3 hours later, the flight attendant subsequently went to Urgent Care and was diagnosed with a serious injury.

The NTSB reported on Mar 3rd that the cabin crew was serving drinks at the time of the turbulence encounter, one flight attendant was thrown against the aft galley door and her right hand hit the recyclable can door. At about the same time the flight crew instructed cabin crew via PA to take their seats immediately. After landing the injured flight attendant went to Urgent Care where x-ray revealed a closed fracture of the carpal bone in her right hand.

On Feb 1st 2013 the NTSB released their brief final report concluding the probable cause of the accident was:

The airplane's encounter with moderate turbulence during cruise flight, which resulted in a serious injury to a flight attendant.
