An Alaska Airlines Boeing 737-800, registration N524AS performing flight AS-646 from Portland,OR to Phoenix,AZ (USA), was enroute at FL370 about 180nm southeast of Portland when the crew turned around to return to Portland reporting a burning odour in the aft cabin. The aircraft landed safely back on Portland's runway 28L about 70 minutes after departure.

A replacement Boeing 737-900 registration N280AK reached Phoenix with a delay of about 4 hours.

The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground in Portland about 18 hours after landing back.

The FAA reported they are investigating the occurrence.
