A replacement MD-88 registration N988DL reached Atlanta with a delay of 5.5 hours.
A passenger reported the aircraft was climbing out of Cancun about 15 minutes into the flight when two loud bangs were heard from the right hand engine associated with some jolts felt in the cabin. The crew stopped the climb, announced the engine was shut down and returned to Cancun for a single engine landing. The passenger reported the right hand engine appeared completely black after landing.
